In case you don’t know already, DeathSpank is an action-RPG mixed with adventure gameplay. A lot of people are saying it is like Diablo meets Monkey Island which is appropriate because Ron Gilbert, the co-creator of Monkey Island, was the Creative Director for the game. The quick summary is that the game has a ton of action, a ton of loot and is as funny as hell.

An early design goal for combat was that it needed to be approachable but with surprising depth. Gamers had to be able to pick up the game and figure it out immediately but make little discoveries as they continued to play.

The first thing players use are mortal weapons. This large collection of blunt objects and sharp things do physical damage to enemies. They’re an effective and satisfying way to smash enemies or put holes in them.

Next up are what we call elemental weapons. These are imbued with mystic energies that are more effective on the right enemy, or far less on the wrong one. For example, you can use fire weapons on ice monsters, nature weapons on ghosts, you get the idea. It’s a simple thing but results in the player constantly making small tactical choices.

After that are Weapons Of Justice, crazy-powerful items that are most effective when DeathSpank’s Justice meter is full. How do you fill that meter you ask? Good question. Well the slow way is to button mash. The fast and totally more fun way is to create your own combos by using a variety of weapons, filling the meter quickly while doing bonus damage. Weapons of Justice can fling lightning, stun enemies or drive them into the ground!

And then there’s Runestones. These are looted from extremely hard to kill creatures but give DeathSpank some of his coolest abilities. To use a Runestone, DeathSpank uses a Weapon of Justice in one hand and an elemental weapon in the other in a two-handed strike for devastating results. Enemies are flung into the sky by geysers, have souls pulled out of them or are filled with dozens of flaming swords.

We’ll stop there but mention things like tactically divine airstrikes, poison-coated crossbow bolts, and portable black holes (no really). On top of all that there’s a whole defensive side to DeathSpank, with dozens of potions and over a hundred pieces of unique armour for the min-maxers out there.

Ok this is usually the part in the post where the developers mention something they ‘heard in the hallway’. We’ll let you in on an industry secret, those are totally contrived, they didn’t hear anything, there probably wasn’t even a hallway. Have fun storming the castle!

DeathSpank is available now in the Playstation Network.

Mega Man Universe was trademarked not too long ago, and many thought that it was going to be Capcom’s new umbrella title for anything involving Mega Man, but thanks to a new trailer and some details, they couldn’t be more off track.

Capcom confirmed that it will be a new game that will be released to the Playstation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace, and that it will “deliver the experience fans want” using “imagination” as the “star of the game”.  So far it suggests that you’ll be playing in the Mega Man universe, but will have access to other Capcom characters besides Mega Man like Ryu and Arthur.  Or maybe it will be the Mega Man characters mixed into other games… who really knows, but you can watch the trailer below and judge for yourself.

Expect more details after San Diego’s Comic-Con 2010!

According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Sony may be close to securing a deal with Hulu to bring its service to the Playstation Network very soon.

Expect an announcement some time this upcoming week, and watch your PS3 and PSP’s for all kinds of television content, movies, and more from Hulu!

DC Comics has finally launched their own digital comic app on Sony Playstation devices (Playstation 3 and PSP) and Apple’s iOS4 range of devices (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad).

Both the comiXology (Apple) and the PlayStation Network Digital Comics launch offerings will include classic titles from DC Comics, Vertigo and WildStorm, such as Batman: Hush, Green Lantern: Rebirth, Fables: Legends in Exiles and Planetary: All Over the World and Other Stories. Both programs will share a tiered pricing format, with digital comics priced from $.99 to $2.99 per issue. The Justice League: Generation Lost mini-series will be available through both platforms day and date with each issue’s print edition on-sale date, with both the digital and print editions priced at $2.99. Several comics will be available for free at launch, including the first installment of the ZUDA series Bayou and select stories from Batman: Black & White.

To further promote today’s announcement, DC Comics is offering a free 10-page preview of the 700th issue of Superman available through both platforms, day and date with the issue going on sale in comic book stores. The 10 page story is a prelude to writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Eddy Barrows’ highly anticipated “Grounded” storyline that will be published in Superman which will examine how Superman sees America, and how America sees Superman.

Co-Publisher at DC Comics, Jim Lee, had this to say about the launch of the app:

“At DC Comics, it has been a top priority that DC forges a meaningful, forward-looking digital strategy.  As both a comic book creator and Co-Publisher, it was incredibly important that our plan includes not only creator incentive payments, but also an innovative component that supports comic shop owners. We see digital as an opportunity to grow our entire business.”

All devices will share a pricing format that will range from $.99 to $2.99 per issue for classics from DC Comics, Vertigo, and WildStorm.

The Black Panther animated series that made its debut on BET in Australia, is finally coming to everyone, everywhere via digital download.  iTunes, Playstation Network, Xbox Live, and Microsoft Zune will all have the capability to download the series starting June 23, 2010, and there will be 12 episodes total.

Coming soon to the PSN and XBLA is a new title in the series of Contra games called Hard Corps: Uprising.

From an appearance standpoint, the gameplay looks unchanged and will remain a typical side scrolling action/adventure title. The storyline however has an interesting twist… the villain from Contra: Hard Corps (Colonel Bahamut) is now the protagonist and is fighting against the aliens who are trying to invade.

You’ll be able to play the game alone, or with a partner (both online and off), and currently you’ll have a choice between two playable characters (with more on the way via DLC). There are two different modes as well, Arcade Mode (where one hit kills you), and Rising Mode (where three hits will kill you).

Hard Corps: Uprising will be released Winter 2010.
